The present invention relates to a method for implanting hypodermically into an animal an object with an electronic device which can contain readable information relating to the animal. The object is implanted in the head of the animal at a point immediately behind the place where the ear is attached to the head of the animal. The present invention also relates to a pistol for implanting the object. The pistol is comprised of a device for providing an opening in the skin of the animal and a conveyance mechanisim for implanting the object in the body. The pistol provides a stop unit which grips the attachment point of the ear to the head of the animal.
