A method is provided for the establishment of a transmission protocol proxy means at an intermediate point in a communications link between the mobile user and the data node. That transmission protocol proxy means operates to intercept data packets from the data source, which may be the data node or the mobile user, buffer those packets prior to forwarding on to the intended data sink, and return an acknowledgment to the data source indicating receipt of the data packets, according to the operative transmission protocol.
