The present invention improves the fatigue resistance of steel reinforced materials such as wires or cables in a tire by treating the steel reinforced material of a cured tire either during the retreading of the tire or while the tire is in service on the vehicle. The treatment method comprises the steps of: applying a tensile force to the steel reinforced material of a magnitude equal to that of a tensile force applied on the steel reinforced material when the tire is subjected to an inflation pressure greater than approximately one hundred and ten percent (110%) of the nominal inflation pressure, and less than a tensile strength of the steel reinforced material. The treatment method also includes the step of maintaining the application of the tensile force to the steel reinforced material for a predetermined period, which alters a characteristic of the growth of cracks in the steel reinforced material.
