The object of the invention is a method for improving the surface properties of paper and cardboard. In the method, the surface of the paper or the cardboard is treated with a material composition, which contains a binder fraction and a pigment fraction, wherein part of the pigment is formed by an aqueous phase polymerization product of po- lymerizable monomers and modified starch. The glass tran- sition point (Tg) of the polymer is at least +50 °C.
