ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Reactive materials having a high affinity for oxygen are incorporated into molten steel while using an alkaline earth material to sacrificially tie-up oxygen and thereby prevent the formation of reactive material oxides. The steel must be in the killed condition prior to addition of the reactive material. The method is especially suited for the incorporation of rare earths into molten steel.
