A method for selectively increasing the production of propionate in the gastro- intestinal tract of a mammal. The method includes the step of enterally administering to the mammal a nutritional composition which contains dextran. Increasing the propionate production results in decreased blood cholesterol levels, decreased blood triglyceride levels, decreased very low density lipoprotein levels, increased high density lipoprotein levels, and increased insulin sensitivity.

La présente invention concerne un procédé permettant d'augmenter sélectivement la production de propionate dans les voies gastro-intestinales d'un mammifère. Le procédé de l'invention consiste à administrer au mammifère, par voie entérale, une composition nutritionnelle contenant du dextrane. L'augmentation de la production de propionate entraîne une réduction de la cholestérolémie, une réduction des taux sanguins de triglycérides, une réduction des taux de lipoprotéines de très basse densité, une augmentation des taux de lipoprotéines de haute densité et une augmentation de la sensibilité insulinique.
