The invention relates to DNA sequences which code for a protein having the enzymatic activity of a .beta.-ketoacyl-ACP synthase (KAS) of the enzyme complex of the fatty acid synthase (FAS). The invention also relates to transgenic plants and micro-organisms which contain nucleic acid sequences that code for proteins having the activity of a .beta.-ketoacyl-ACP((acyl carrier protein)) synthase (KAS) of the enzyme complex of the fatty acid synthase (FAS). The invention further relates to a method for influencing the fatty acid pattern and/or for increasing the fatty acid content, especially the content of short and middle chain fatty acids, in plants, especially in seed tissues and other tissue that synthesise and/or store triacylglycerines, as well as in micro-organisms, especially bacteria and algae. The inventive method comprises the expression of proteins having the activity of a KAS of the enzyme complex of the fatty acid synthase in transgenic plants or micro- organisms.
L'invention concerne des séquences ADN qui codent pour une protéine ayant l'activité enzymatique d'une .beta.-kétoacyl-ACP-synthase (KAS) du complexe enzymatique de l'acide gras synthase (FAS). L'invention concerne aussi des plantes et des micro-organismes transgéniques, qui contiennent des séquences d'acide nucléique et qui codent pour des protéines ayant l'activité d'une .beta.-kétoacyl-ACP(acyl carrier protein)-synthase (KAS) du complexe enzymatique de l'acide gras synthase (FAS). L'invention concerne en outre un procédé pour influencer le modèle d'acide gras et/ou augmenter la teneur en acides gras, en particulier la teneur en acides gras à chaîne courte et moyenne, de plantes, en particulier de tissus de graines et d'autres tissus synthétisant et/ou stockant des triacylglycérols, ainsi que de micro-organismes, en particulier de bactéries et d'algues, comprenant l'expression de protéines ayant l'activité d'une KAS du complexe enzymatique de l'acide gras synthase dans des plantes ou des micro-organismes transgéniques.
