A method for inhibition of retroviral replication by inactivation of the enzyme adenosine diphosphoribosyl transferase. The method is useful for prevention and treatment of retroviral infections, including HIV. The inhi- bition of the viral replication is achieved by administrating to a mammal susceptible to or infected with a retrovirus, drugs which speci- fically inhibit poly-ADP-ribosylation activity of adenosine diphosphoribosyl transferase.
