To embed data or synchronisation signals in a data stream which is to be coded, a component of the data stream which will not contribute substantially to a subsequent coded form of the data stream is identified and additional data is inserted into the component so identified. The additional data may comprise a defined sequence of synchronisation words to facilitate identification or synchronisation with previous coding of the signal. In particular, the synchronisation sequence may be used to identify frame boundaries.
