VARRESE A METHOD FOR JOINING TANTALUM TO NON-REFRACTORY MATERIALS AND AN APPARATUS UTILIZING SUCH A TECHNIQUE ABSTRACT A method for joining tantalum to non-refractory materials including the steps of bonding tantalum to a Kovar substrate by brazing in an inert atmosphere whereby lncusil as the braze material is elevated to its liquidus temperature followed by a slow cooling of approximately 100°F/hr. to below its solidus temperature to minimize distortion of the bond therebetween. The bonded substrate and tantalum material combination is utilized in an apparatus wherein the substrate is attached to a support housing, which may be stainless steel, by electron beam welding.
