ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for producing a water-swellable, water-insoluble carboxyalkyl polysaccharide having improved absorbent properties. The method involves forming an aqueous dispersion of a water-soluble polysaccharide capable of being carboxyalkylated. To the aqueous dispersion is added an amount of carboxyalkylating reactants under conditions sufficient to form a water-soluble carboxyalkyl polysaccharide. The water-soluble carboxyalkyl polysaccharide is recovered from said aqueous dispersion. The carboxyalkyl polysaccharide is heat treated at a temperature above about 50°C. whereby the carboxyalkyl polysaccharide crosslinks. Finally, impurities are removed from the recovered carboxyalkyl polysaccharide. - 28 -
