ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of making a friction band for use as either a brake band or a transmission band. The band includes an elongated metallic strip lined with an elong- ated frictional lining strip. The strips are adhered to- gether while in a flat or straight condition. The ad- hered strips are then formed into a generally arcuate shape, with the lining strip on the inside of the arc. Brackets are welded to the radially outer surface of the metallic strip at each end thereof. The ends of the lining strip are formed with openings to expose the radially inner surface of the metallic strip to permit electrodes to be applied against the radially inner surface of the metallic strip in directly opposed rela- tion to the brackets, thereby providing a direct path for welding current and making it possible to form a better weld than if no such openings were provided. This method is simpler and less expensive than adhering the lining strip to the metallic strip after the latter has been formed to arcuate shape.
