TITLE METHOD FOR MAKING HIGH EFFICIENCY VOLUME PHASE HOLOGRAMS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for making volume phase Holographic Optical Elements derived from binary Intensity Computer Generated Holograms, Welch utilizes a photohardened refractive index-modulatory polymer sandwiched between two transparent, substantially identical, dimensionally stable substrates. The photohardened refractive index-modulatory polymer is imaged by intimately contacting the photosensitive polymer layer with a computer generated relief image photomask-master and passing actinic radiation through the photomask-master in order to change the refractive index of the exposed areas of the photopolymer to produce a volume phase Holographic Optical Element.
