ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The instant invention relates to a novel method for preparing novel multimetallic catalysts which comprises contacting a catalyst comprising a first metal with a solution of a second metal, said second metal is selected to be lower in the electrochemical series than said first metal and the contacting conditions are adjusted so that a portion of said first metal is displayed by said second metal. The second metal covers only a fraction .theta. of the first metal where 0<0<1.0, preferably .01<0<.5. This novel technique is believed to form catalysts characterized as containing surface alloys or multi- metallic clusters of said first and second metals.
