ABSTRACT Disclosed is a method for producing a light-sensitive, elect- rically chargeable surface layer on a printing drum for electrostatic photocopying comprising introducing a gaseous compound containing silicon and hydrogen into an evacuated receptacle in which a low pressure glow discharge is maintained between the printing drum that is to be coated, situated in the interior of the receptacle, and a counter electrode dis- posed concentrically thereto, so that the gaseous compound containing silicon and hydrogen decomposes under the effect of the glow discharge plasma, depositing amorphous silicon on the printing drum. During the deposition the surface of the printing drum is held at a temperature of 200 to 300°C.
