Abstract of the Disclosure A method is provided for making polyetherimides through an imide-amine exchange reaction catalyzed by Group (II-V)b basic metals and compounds derived therefrom. Dis- placement of organic monoamine from bis-(N-organophthalimide) is effected under melt conditions with organic diamine, The polyetherimide can be used as an injection moldable thermoplastic.
