METHOD FOR MAKING SILICA REINFORCED SILICONE SEALANTS Abstract A process for producing a silicone elastomeric base consists essentially of mixing treated fume silica and hydroxyl endblocked polydiorganosiloxane oligomer, polymerizing with sulfonic acid or quaternary ammonium carboxylate catalyst while controlling the atmosphere in the mixer to a controlled partial pressure of water vapor to control the molecular weight of the polymer produced, then terminating the catalyst, to give a silicone elastomeric base of hydroxyl endblocked polydiorganosiloxane having fume silica reinforcement. The base can be further combined with a moisture activated crosslinking system to give a moisture activated silicone sealant. The thixotropy of the above sealant can be controlled through the post addition of small amounts of a thixotropic promoter, such as untreated fume silica.
