A method of making steel in an electric arc furnace (10) is provided. The method comprises the steps of measuring electrical current in at least two phases of electrical power supplied to electrodes in the furnace during a campaign, establishing a setpoint current level and an input time interval, and switching between modes of inputting exothermic energy into the steel melt where at least two phases have measured current levels below the setpoint for the input time interval.

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de produire de l'acier dans un four (10) à arc électrique. Les étapes de ce procédé consistent à mesurer le courant électrique dans au moins deux phases de courant alimentant les électrodes placées dans le four au cours d'une campagne, à établir une valeur de consigne pour le courant, et un intervalle de temps d'alimentation, et à effectuer une commutation entre modes permettant l'apport d'énergie exothermique dans l'acier en fusion lorsque les phases mesurées présentent des niveaux de courant inférieurs à la valeur de consigne pendant l'intervalle de temps d'alimentation.
