A tissue sheet is made using a modified wet pressing process employing an integrally sealed air press. After initial formation and conventional vacuum dewatering, the wet web is conformed to the surface contour of a relatively coarse fabric to give the web a textured surface. By creating a pressure differential across the web of at least 30 inches of mercury and an air stream through the web of at least 500 SCFM/in2, the air press noncompressively dewaters the wet web to a consistency of about 30 to about 40 percent prior to a Yankee dryer. The web is dried to substantially preserve its three- dimensional, throughdried-like texture. The resulting web has an exceptionally high degree of bulk and absorbency not previously found in wet-pressed products.
On fabrique une bande de papier ménager en mettant en oeuvre un procédé modifié de pressage humide utilisant une presse à air complètement hermétique. Après formation initiale et déshydratation classique sous vide, la bande humide est conformée au contour de la surface d'un tissu relativement grossier pour conférer à la bande une surface structurée. En créant sur toute la bande une différence de pression d'au moins 30 pouces de mercure et un écoulement d'air traversant d'au moins 500 SCFM/in?2¿, la bande humide est déshydratée sans compression, par la presse à air, à une consistance d'environ 30 à 40 pour cent avant de passer dans un sécheur Yankee. La bande est séchée pour préserver sensiblement sa structure tridimensionnelle obtenue par séchage à air traversant. La bande ainsi produite présente une épaisseur moyenne et un pouvoir absorbant exceptionnels jamais égalés jusqu'ici pour des produits de pressage humide.
