The present invention provides a method and apparatus for forming an outwardly extending tubular portion (14, 16) in a side wall of a workpiece, such as a rocker arm (10). The method includes the following steps: (a) positioning the workpiece in a punch press (18, 20) having a central shaft (30) with a movable punch (64) mounted in an aperture (65) formed in the central shaft for lateral sliding movement with respect to the shaft; (b) extending the central shaft (30) into the interior cavity of the workpiece; and (c) actuating lateral sliding movement of the movable punch against the side wall of the workpiece to cold form the outwardly extending tubular portion (14, 16) in the side wall.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un dispositif servant à façonner une partie tubulaire (14, 16) s'étendant vers l'extérieur dans une paroi latérale d'une pièce, telle qu'un culbuteur (10). Ce procédé consiste à: (a) placer la pièce dans une presse à poinçonner (18, 20) comportant un arbre central (30) pourvu d'un poinçon mobile (64) monté dans une ouverture (65) située dans l'arbre central, de manière à effectuer un déplacement coulissant latéral par rapport à l'arbre; (b) introduire l'arbre central (30) dans la cavité intérieure de la pièce; (c) déclencher le déplacement coulissant latéral du poinçon mobile contre la paroi latérale de la pièce afin de façonner à froid la partie tubulaire (14, 16) s'étendant vers l'extérieur dans la paroi latérale.
