A method for utilization of zinc byproducts in the manufacture of clear brine fluids comprising the step of mixing zinc feedstock containing metal impurities with a halogenic acid to produce an impure zinc halide solution. The metal impurities are removed from the zinc halide solution in a two-stage process: the first stage comprises the steps of precipitating and filtering out manganese and iron and the second stage comprises the steps of contacting the zinc halide solution with elemental zinc to cement out the remaining metals comprising nickel, lead, cadmium, copper, mercury and cobalt. Preferably, the zinc halide solution is contacted with zinc shot in multiple passes through zinc-filled column systems. The pH is adjusted between each step, if necessary, to maintain the pH in the first stage within a range of from about 3.0 to 5.0 and the alkalinity during the second stage at less than 1.0 % zinc oxide.
L'invention concerne un procédé d'utilisation de produits de récupération de zinc pour fabriquer des fluides de saumure transparents, le procédé consistant à mélanger une matière première de zinc contenant des impuretés métalliques avec un acide halogéné pour produire une solution impure d'halogénure de zinc. Les impuretés métalliques sont retirées de la solution d'halogénure de zinc dans un procédé en deux phases: la première phase consiste à précipiter et à filtrer le manganèse et le fer; et la deuxième phase consiste à mettre en contact la solution d'halogénure de zinc avec un zinc élémentaire pour retirer par adhésion le reste des métaux comprenant du nickel, du plomb, du cadmium, du cuivre, du mercure et du cobalt. De préférence, la solution d'halogénure de zinc est mise en contact avec une charge d'injection de zinc lors de plusieurs passages dans des systèmes de colonnes remplies de zinc. Le pH est ajusté, si nécessaire, entre chaque phase afin de maintenir le pH dans la première phase dans une gamme de 3,0 à 5,0 environ et l'alcalinité dans la deuxième phase à moins de 1,0 % d'oxyde de zinc.
