The present invention pertains to a process for manufacturing high molecular weight polyethylene fibers, compris-ing subjecting a polyethylene tape with a weight average molecular weight of at least 500 000 gram/mole, an Mw/Mn ratio of at most 6, and a 200/110 uniplanar orientation parameter of at least 3 to a force in the direction of the thickness of the tape over the whole width of the tape. The invention also pertains to a polyethylene fiber having an Mw of at least 500 000 gram/mole, an Mw/ Mn ratio of at most 6, and a 020 uniplanar orientation value of at most 55°. The use of these fibres in various applications is also claimed. The preparation of low-linear density fibers is particularly preferred.
La présente invention porte sur un procédé pour la fabrication de fibres de polyéthylène de masse moléculaire élevée, consistant à soumettre une bande de polyéthylène avec une masse moléculaire moyenne en poids d'au moins 500 000 grammes/mole, un rapport Mw/Mn d'au maximum 6 et un paramètre d'orientation en monoplan (200)/(110) d'au moins 3, à une force dans la direction de l'épaisseur de la bande, sur toute la largeur de la bande. L'invention porte également sur une fibre de polyéthylène présentant une Mw d'au moins 500 000 grammes/mole, un rapport Mw/Mn d'au maximum 6 et une valeur d'orientation en monoplan (020) d'au maximum 55 °. L'invention porte également sur l'utilisation de ces fibres dans diverses applications. La fabrication de fibres de faible densité linéaire est particulièrement préférée.
