ABSTRACT OF DISCLOSURE The preparation of pyridine and pyridine derivatives from alkynes and cyano compounds including HCN is disclosed. The process can be carried out in the presence of a cobalt or rhodium catalyst having at least one ligand with one or more boron atoms. Certain new cobalt or rhodium catalysts containing such ligand are also disclosed. Also disclosed is a process for the formation of 2-aminopyridine by contacting acetylene with cyanamide such as in the presence of a cobalt or rhodium catalyst which has at least one ligand with one or more boron atoms.
