ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for marking an optical element comprising the incorporation of a fluorescent dye-stuff in the whole or a part of an optical element formed from plastics material. The dye-stuff may be incorporated in the molten plastics material from which the optical element is formed. The dye-stuff may instead be dissolved in water and the optical element dyed by immersion in the solution, which may optionally contain a surfactant. Alternatively the dye-stuff may be dissolved in alcohol and markings printed onto the optical element using a rubber stamp, the element being subsequently dried to encou- rage absorption of the dye-stuff by the lens. The concentra- tion of the dye-stuff incorporated is regulated so that under normal sunlight or room lighting the marked optical elements do not appear different from unmarked ones, but under ultra- violet light the marks become visible. Optical elements, such as lenses, thus marked do not have transmission rate curves substantially different from those which are untreated.
