ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of colour marking of logs to indicate their dimensions, and apparatus for this purpose, in which a marking unit marks a log with a colour code corresponding to a dimension of the log. The device is preferably part of cross-cutting apparatus, which is capable of being set to cut timber into a variety of lengths, and the colour code representative of each length is automatically impressed on the log when it is cut.
