A method and apparatus is disclosed for inspecting a wall to evaluate the remaining thickness of the wall as well as the extent to which the wall has been infiltrated by another material. The disclosure discusses directing photons of radiation and/or neutrons into the wall and measuring and analyzing the radiation emitted from the wall as a result of Compton scattering, pair production, photoelectric absorption and/or neutron absorption. The invention is particularly well suited for inspecting a carbon hearth-wall liner of an iron-smelting blast furnace.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant d'inspecter une paroi afin d'évaluer son épaisseur résiduelle ainsi que le niveau d'infiltration de la paroi par un autre matériau. Le procédé de l'invention consiste à diriger des photons de rayonnements et/ou des neutrons contre la paroi et à mesurer et à analyser les rayonnements émis par la paroi sous l'effet de la diffusion Compton, la production de paires, l'absorption photo-électrique et/ou l'absorption de neutrons. L'invention convient tout particulièrement à l'inspection d'une chemise sole-paroi en carbone d'un four sidérurgique.
