A method for predicting hydrocarbon-bearing zones and estimating rock properties by analyzing fluids trapped in the pore spaces or adsorbed on the surfaces of rock samples. The trapped gases are removed under vacuum and analyzed by a mass spectrometer. Data peaks corresponding to petroleum constituent molecules provide an indication of presence and abundance of hydrocarbons. A decrease of the count rate over time is used to estimate permeability and other rock properties. Concentration ratios for selected constituents indicate oil quality and depth of the oil-water contact.

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de prévoir des zones porteuses d'hydrocarbures et d'estimer des propriétés rocheuses par analyse de fluides piégés dans les espaces poreux des échantillons de roche ou adsorbés sur les surfaces de ceux-ci. Les gaz piégés sont éliminés sous vide et analysés au moyen d'un spectromètre de masse. Des crêtes de données correspondant aux molécules de constituants de pétrole indiquent la présence et l'abondance d'hydrocarbures. Une baisse du taux de comptage dans le temps est utilisée pour estimer la perméabilité et d'autres propriétés rocheuses. Des taux de concentration destinés à des constituants sélectionnés indiquent la qualité de l'huile et la profondeur du contact huile-eau.
