This invention describes methods for using peptide nucleic acid (PNA) and/or deoxy nucleotide guanidine (DNG) derivatives as probes to quantify specific RNA or DNA sequences, especially those associated with gene function. The invention eliminates the need to remove unbound probes and offers advantages relating to specificity, sensitivity, and reproducibility. The claimed methods are particularly useful in high volume screens.
