ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for direct iron making is disclosed for preventing clustering in a preliminary reducing furnace and attaining an improvement of reduction efficiency in the preliminary reducing furnace. A preliminary reduction is performed in a coated state of the iron ore surface with carbon, and H2 and hydrocarbon gas evolved in the coating treatment are fed to the preliminary reducing furnace to accelerate the reduction rate.
