A method and apparatus are disclosed for mixing two liquid phases in a controlled fashion without employing high circumferential speeds of the stirrer, and for then separating these dispersed liquids. The apparatus of the invention includes a mixer in which a rotating helical stirrer maintains liquid circulation and uniform mixing of the two liquid phases. The dispersion flows out of the mixer, and into a settling system in which the flow velocity is varied to encourage coalescence and separation of the two phases.
