A method for monitoring shaft alignment of industrial machinery. Firstly, provide a multi-point fibre optic sensor having a first end and a second end. Secondly, position the first end of the multi-point fibre optic sensor immediately adjacent to at least one of an output shaft of a power unit and an input shaft of a driven unit. The multi-point fibre optic sensor has an X axis sensing point and a Y axis sensing point relative to the at least one of the output shaft and the input shaft. Thirdly, direct a light from a light source into the second end of the multi-point fibre optic sensor. The light passes along the fibre optic sensor to the X axis sensing point and the Y axis sensing point at the first end where it is reflected off the at least one of the output shaft and the input shaft. The reflected light passes along the multi-point fibre optic sensor to the second end. Fourthly, monitoring the reflected light on a continuous basis and comparing the reflected light to a datum reference to determine changes in position of the at least one output shaft and the input shaft relative to the datum reference.
