In transmission of bit plane coded (23) digitalized moving pictures, which are subject to a motion compensation (19) and an object based segmentation the bit planes are transmitted in order of decreasing significance. An incremental motion estimation (15, 17) and segmentation (11, 13) is performed in the transmitter (1) and the receiver (5) after each transmitted bit plane of a frame of the moving picture. As a result thereof the information, in particular the segmentation information, which must be transmitted is, in particular in the case of a low transmission rate, significantly reduced, due to the heavy reduction of motion parameters which must be transmitted. This method is, in particular, well suited for employment in low rate transmission systems, such as the public telephone network.

Dans une transmission d'images animées, numérisées et codées en plan mémoire (23), lesquelles images sont sujettes à une compensation de mouvement (19) et à une segmentation orientée objet, les plans mémoire sont transmis par ordre d'importance décroissant. Une estimation (15, 17) et une segmentation (11, 13) de mouvements incrémentiels sont réalisées dans l'émetteur (1) et le récepteur (5) après la transmission de chaque plan mémoire d'une trame de l'image animée. Il en découle que les informations et, notamment les informations de segmentation, à transmettre, sont spécialement dans le cas d'une transmission à faible vitesse, notablement réduites, et ce en raison de l'importante réduction des paramètres de mouvement à transmettre. Ce procédé est, en particulier, des plus utiles dans le cas de systèmes à transmission à faible vitesse, le réseau téléphonique public, par exemple.
