ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for obtaining antibody fragments which are generated in bacteria and possess antibody activity is described. The method is characterized by growing the bacteria at a temperature below 37°C and most preferably below 30°C. It was found that the amount of antibody fragments (AbF) is in the range of three to ten fold higher in cells growing at the lower temperature than those in cells growing at 37°C. The functional antibody fragments are produced inside the bacterial cytoplasm without the secretion of immunoglobulin polypeptides.
