The invention features a method for oxygen delignification of paper pulp. This method comprises an activation pretreatment step using an organic peroxyacid such as paracetic acid before the oxygen delignification step or between two oxygen delignification stages. A level of delignification of about 70 to 75 % is obtained compared with about 50 % using the method of oxygen delignification with the usual pretreatment steps.
