The polarisation transformer (TRFI) on a birefractive substrate material (SUB) has a greater number of cells (Pj), each with two mode converter electrodes (Eij, i=1, 2; j=1, 2,... n) which can be controlled individually or individually in more than two groups in order to compensate for polarisation mode dispersion.
