ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In the polymerization of at least one ethylenically un- saturated monomer other than vinyl chloride, deposition of poly- mer scale on the inner walls of a polymerization reactor and other surfaces coming into contact with the monomer is effec- tively inhibited, regardless of the type of polymerization, by coating prior to the polymerization, the surfaces with at least one compound selected from organic electron-donor compounds (A) and organic electron-acceptor compounds (B), the compound or com- pounds having been or being brought into contact with a compound (C) comprising an oxidizing agent, a reducing agent, an acid or a base, or having been or being irradiated with ultraviolet light. A product obtained from the compound or compounds (A) and/or (B) by reaction with compound (C) or by irradiation with ultraviolet light can be added to the polymerization mixture.
