ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for preheating steel scrap by exhaust gas from a steelmaking electric furnace, which comprises: directing, when manufacturing steel from steel scrap in an electric furnace, exhaust gas produced in the electric furnace to an exhaust gas combustion chamber provided along a discharge duct for the exhaust gas, to combust carbon monoxide contained in the exhaust gas to form combustion exhaust gas; and selectively directing part of the combustion exhaust gas into at least one scrap preheating chamber provided along a branch duct branching off from the discharge duct to preheat steel scrap charged in the scrap preheating chamber to a predetermined temperature. The method being characterized by: feeding back all of the combustion exhaust gas after preheating the steel scrap charged in the scrap preheating chamber to the exhaust gas combustion chamber to combust any incomplete-combustion products which are produced by the incomplete combustion of combustible sub- stances entrapped in the steel scrap and which are contained in the combustion exhaust gas. The method has the advantage of reducing pollution. A method of controlling the preheating of the steel scrap at a constant level irrespective of variations in the temperature of the combustion exhaust gas is also taught.
