This invention provides a process for the preparation of 10,11-dihydro- 10-oxo-5H-dibenz/b,f/azepine-5-carboxamide (2) from 10,11 -dihydro-10- hydroxy-5H-dibenz/b,f/azepine-5-carboxamide (1) comprising oxidizing 10,11- dihydro-10-hydroxy-5H-dibenz/b,f/azepine-5-carboxamide (1) by reaction with peroxyacetic acid in the presence of a metal catalyst in a substantially inert solvent.
