ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: Hydrophilic macroporous ion exchangers of the amphoteric character are prepared by copolymerizing anionogenous monomers selected from the group consisting of sulfoalkyl methacrylates, sulfoalkyl acrylates, sulfoalkylacrylamides, sulfoalkylmetha- crylamides, acrylic acid and methacrylic acid, with cationogenous monomers selected from the group consisting of aminoalkyl acrylates, aminoalkyl methacrylates, aminoalkylacrylamides and aminoalkyl- methacrylamides and their quaternary ammonium compounds, together with crosslinking monomers of acrylate or methacrylate type, selected from the group consisting of alkylene diacrylates, alkylene dimethacrylates, oligoglycol and polyglycol diacrylates and dimethacrylates, bisacrylamides, bismethacrylamides and divinylbenzene, in the presence of inert organic compounds selected from the group of alcohols, organic acids, amines and nitriles, in an aqueous dispersion phase. The hydrophilic macro- porous ion exchangers obtained are suitable for the isolation and separation of biological materials.
