ABSTRACT The invention is concerned with a method of preparing polybromoacenaphtene and its condensate which are useful intermediates in the preparation of polybromoacenaphthylene and its condensate possessing excellent flame retardant properties. The method of the invention comprises reacting an acenaphthene derivative or its condensate with bromine in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst, by feeding a solution of the acenaphthene derivative or its condensate and bromine simultaneously at a pre- determined rate into a reactor containing a halogen- ated hydrocarbon and an iron catalyst.
