ABSTRACT A method for preparing 3-benzoyl-2-mercaptopropionic acid derivatives represented by the general formula Image (I) (wherein, X represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a hydroxy group, a lower alkyl group or a lower alkoxy group, Y represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a lower alkyl group or a lower alkoxy group, Z represents an acyl group, and R represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group which comprises reacting a compound represented by the general formula Image (II) (wherein, X, Y and R are defined above) with a thiocarboxylic acid having the general formula HSZ (wherein Z is as defined above) in an organic solvent. The compounds of formula (I) have immuno- modulative activity and are effective for treatment of diseases caused by abnormal immunofunction.
