ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for preparing a 3-methyl-2-(4'-halogenophenyl)- butyronitrile which comprises alkylating a p-halogenophenylaceto- nitrile by reacting the p-halogenophenylacetonitrile with an isopropyl halide in the presence of an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution, using an organic quaternary ammonium salt as a catalyst.
