ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention is a method for making sheeted wood pulp which may later be readily milled or shredded to form an absorbent fluff product. An unrefined wet chemical wood pulp furnish is treated with gaseous ammonia under moderate pressure. Preferred conditions are about 20-40% consistency at pressures of at least 350 kPa for 20-60 minutes. The bulk of the ammonia is then flashed off and the remainder removed by washing. Agitation during the treatment step is desirable. The product is then sheeted without refining. Treated sheets have low power requirements during shredding. Absorbency of the resulting fluff is not adversely affected as it is with normal cationic debonding agents.
