ABSTRACT A method for preparing a benzoylpropionic acid derivative represented by the general formula Image (I) (wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group or a benzyl group, R2 represents a lower alkyl group or a phenyl group, x represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a lower alkyl group, a lower alkoxy group, a phenoxy group or a halogenophenoxy group, and Y repre- sents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group) which comprises reacting a carboxylic acid compound repre- sented by the general formula Image (II) (wherein X and Y are as defined above) with a thiocar- boxylic acid represented by the general formula R2COSH (wherein R2 is as defined above) in the presence of a basic catalyst in an organic solvent and, if desired, further reacting the resulting product with an alky- lating agent having R1 other than a hydrogen atom in the presence of a base in an organic solvent. These compounds have an immunomodulative function and are effective for treatment of diseases caused by abnormal immunofunction.
