ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved process is provided for preparing ethyl vanadate. The process includes reacting vanadium oxytrichloride with ethanol under sub- stantially anhydrous condition in a mole ratio of vanadium oxytrichloride to ethanol of from 1:1 to 1:6 and at a temperature of from 0 to 80°C in the presence of ammonia. The improvement involves conducting the reaction in the presence of a hydrocarbon solvent and includes the subsequent step of adding an amide selected from the class consisting of formamide and methyl formamide which forms two liquid phases, one phase containing the ethyl vana- date and the other containing the undisolved ammonium chloride, the hydro- carbon solvent being immiscible with the amide, and being a nonsolvent for the ammonium chloride. The ethyl vanadate need not be separated by a pro- cess requiring prolonged heating thereby causing degradation of the ethyl vanadate, or by filtration, wherein ammonium chloride has a tendency to plug up the filter, but may be readily separated from the ammonium chloride- amide layer by any other conventional technique known in the art.
