- 30 - ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for preparing a graft copolymer is here disclosed which is characterized by comprising the step of carrying out a living polymerization of at least one (meth)acrylic ester by the use of a polymeric compound as an initiator having one or more units represented by the following formula (I) in a molecular chain substantially in the absence of water in the presence of a Lewis acid or a donor compound of an anion selected from the group consist- ing of HF2-, (CH3)3SiF2- and F-: Image (I) wherein R is hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and R' is an alkyl group having 1 to 12 carbon atoms. According to this method of the present invention, components of the polymeric compound constituting the backbone and the (meth)acrylic ester constituting the branch portions of the graft copolymer can be selected in a wide range, and a (meth)acrylic graft copolymer can be obtained in a high yield in which the chain length of the backbone and the branch portions is controlled.
