This invention comprises a process for lactam preparation through a vapour phase reaction of an aliphatic aminonitrile with water, in the presence of a solid catalyst characterized by its being an alumina with a specific surface area measured by means of the BET method greater than or equal to 10 m2/g. Aliphatic lactams, such as epsilon-caprolactam in particular, are the base compounds for the preparation of polyamides (polyamide 6 from caprolactam).
