ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE p-Aminophenol, a chemical intermediate for preparation of a wide variety of chemical products such as the analgesic acetaminophen, is prepared by a process in which nitrobenzene is hydrogenated in an acid aqueous reaction medium in the presence of a catalyst comprising platinum support on gamma-alumina. The process gives good performance characteristics along with recovery of the catalytic platinum in high yield.
