This invention provides a method of imparting corrosion resistance to metal, e.g. nickel, surfaces in contact with hot, concentrated caustic soda solution containing corrosion promoting anionic impurities, e.g. chlorate, nitrate or nitrite ion, by adding to the caustic solution a polyhydroxy compound, e.g. sorbitol, in amount sufficient to produce a cathodic shift in the metal corrosion potential whereby corrosion resistance is imparted to said metal surfaces in the presence of said corrosion promoting anionic impurity.
