2105764 9216948 PCTABS00016 A process is disclosed for processing absorber rods made of steel tubes filled with boron compounds suitable for compact and safe terminal storage of radioactive materials. The rods are immersed in a molten bath composed of iron, nickel, chromium or manganese, in an oxygen-free atmosphere, and maintained at a temperature above 1500 ·C, releasing the tritium contained in the tubes. The tritium is then removed with an inert sweeping gas and bonded in a tritium trap. A tritium-free monolithic block is thus obtained, containing metal borides and carbides and capable of being terminally stored.
